Avoiding Relapse

Los Angeles, California—February 12 , 2008

When it comes to getting sober many alcoholics and addicts can manage to clean up for a couple of days, weeks or even months on there own. But without any real program of change it’s inevitable that they wind up using one more time asking themselves “why can’t I stay sober?”

“In order to stay sober they need to change, ” says Larry Luttrell Director of Liberty House and Liberty Ranch, two highly structured sober living homes that specialize in chronic re-lapsers.

“Sobriety means change. Liberty House provides the needed structure to help bring about that change. Often many people who aren’t in sober living and are just going to 12-step meetings relapse before that psychic shift can occur.”

Sober living homes provide the necessary support for persons to stay sober, while they build a support group, attend 12-step meetings, and begin working the steps with a sponsor. “I was a chronic re-lapser,” says Bobby D., a recovering addict and now a successful stockbroker with over four years of sobriety.

“Since I was a teenager I have been in and out of numerous detox’s and rehabs. I’d stay sober for brief periods of time but I never got to the core of my behavior. The program and the structure of Liberty House forced me to really look at what I was doing and that I was not who I thought I was. They held me accountable for my actions. Through the structure of the house I became responsible for my actions. What they pointed out was that it no longer mattered about what my intentions were but what I did wrong and why I did it. Of course the change in my thinking didn’t happen over night. That’s why it was so important for me to get into a long term structured program like Liberty House.”

“The insanity of drug addiction and alcoholism is that we do the same thing over and over again expecting different results,” says Luttrell. “But in order to break the cycle of constantly re-lapsing you have to be willing to do things differently than you did before. The program at Liberty House works because it makes the addict look at who they really are and provides the needed support to make the changes necessary to achieve long term sobriety.”
