Can I Afford Sober Living?
Los Angeles, California—April, 2009
One of the biggest roadblocks in trying to get sober is financial. You hear it over and over again “It’s too expensive, I can’t afford it.” “The question I ask them is can you afford not to get sober?” asks Larry Luttrell director of Liberty House, a men’s sober living home in West Los Angeles that specializes in long term structured sober living.
“For the addict who can’t seem to get clean on his own, moving into a sober living home is a scary proposition but may be his the option left to clean up and stop the downward spiral they’re in. A person who is using drugs and alcohol is under the illusion that they themselves can stop on their own. But in almost all cases that’s not going to happen. If that was the case it would have happened by now. Through years of working in recovery I’ve seen countless people say they can do it on their own,” says Larry.
“But what the addict doesn’t understand is that their best thinking got them to this point. If they really want to change their lives then they need to change their behavior by taking a look at the way they think and act. Liberty House provides the necessary support for addicts to change.”
In the 15 years that liberty house has been operating, thousands of residents have successfully gone through the program. “Compared to places charging up to ten times what we charge we’re a bargain” says Luttrell. “it’s a small price to pay If you want to change your life.”
The structure at Liberty House is designed to change the way a person looks at themselves. Through the structure of the house a resident learns how to be responsible for their actions. Most people can’t really do that by themselves. If the addict is at the point where no matter how much they try they still can’t stay sober then it’s time to try something that works.
“What we’ve found over the years is that Liberty House is the place for people who can’t seem to do it on their own. People who have been in numerous rehabs and programs around the country seem to thrive within the structure of Liberty House. “We know what works and what doesn’t”, says Larry.
“And the proof is in the results.”
