Liberty House FAQ

What Sets Liberty House Sober Living Home Apart?

  1. The Liberty House Sober Living Home offers a hands on approach. We take a pro-active relationship with our residents.  We get involved in their lives from the beginning.  We help them obtain a 12 step sponsor and remain involved and give feedback to them regarding any problems they may be having.  We also give direction about how to handle problems they encounter as they go about their daily life.  We get the family involved in recovery by attending 12 step Al-Anon meetings.  Because many parents feel reluctant to attend Al-Anon we started a 12 step Al-Anon meeting in 1996 in the living room that was attended by parents and family members of our clients.   This meeting caught on and became so big that we had to move it out to a local church.  We are happy to say that it is thriving and has become one of the largest 12 step Al-Anon meetings on the Westside for parents.  We continue to encourage participation in that meeting by family members year after year.  We also have a Family Group held on Saturdays (off-site) at a local church.  This group is designed to build and strengthen the existing support group of our client’s immediate family.  We also discuss relationships and enabling behavior family members might be engaging in and discuss alternative actions in an open forum.  Everyone gets to learn and participate.  This group is facilitated Dr. Jim Wood.  Dr. Wood has many years of drug and alcohol sobriety and experience in dealing with families who are relatively new to sobriety.  As time goes by and our resident’s lives begin to change for the better, Liberty House is still involved.  We never stop being involved until the resident exits the facility.

Is Liberty House the only Sober Living Home of its kind?

  1. The Liberty House Sober Living Home staff believes that in order to be effective we have to be dedicated to helping others.  We groom our managers from the inside and promote from within.  We never hesitate to cancel our plans and visit the Liberty House facility if a house member is having a difficult time.  We are on call 24/7.  We teach our residents that “going to any lengths” to remain clean and sober is a must and are there for them when they need us.  Surrendering ones will and life to recovery and sobriety is a process, and Liberty House teaches this through its structure and meetings.  As a result, our members achieve long term sobriety and are leading responsible productive lives in the community.  Most other sober living homes cannot or will not do this because of a lack of dedication and commitment to their clients.  Many only want to keep their beds filled and keep the mortgage paid.  They could care less about what is happening on the inside with their clients and yet promote themselves as a strong program.  In the Los Angeles area Liberty House clients consistently take 1 year anniversary cakes at 12 step meetings for sobriety time, year after year.  The facts speak for themselves; Liberty House nurtures, promotes and inspires its residents to grow and recover from addiction.  We teach our residents through inspiration and our staffs own hardships that now that their clean and sober, they can achieve their dreams and goals and we encourage them and support them in doing so.

How many sober living homes in CA and nationwide have modeled themselves after Liberty House?

  1. There are presently three sober living homes in the Los Angeles area that are run by Liberty House graduates.  We are proud of our graduates and are honored that they were inspired enough to follow in our footsteps.  Many of our graduates have returned to their respective trades in the Entertainment Industry, Legal Professions, Clergy, Private Sectors and still more went on to start their own businesses and are thriving.  They all now believe they can succeed and have trust and faith that they will.  Our dedication and commitment to our clients is unrivaled and many well known addiction treatment centers consider our program and structure simply amazing, and have copied certain internal parts of it for their own use.  However, the type of dedication and commitment Liberty House exercises with its clients is difficult for an addiction treatment team at licensed facilities due to long hours, frequent trips to the facility, self-sacrifice, and surrendering of ones own agenda for the greater good.  Liberty House nurtures these types of qualities in its residents and ultimately its managers.

What is the ongoing contact Liberty House has with its graduates?

  1. Liberty House Sober Living believes that if the forces that bind us together are stronger than those that would tear us apart, all will be well. We encourage continued involvement in the Liberty House facility by our graduates.  We believe this is crucial to both the clients and the graduates, and as such invites its graduates to our yearly Camping Trip and Christmas Party (both in their 11th year), and our monthly Graduate Meeting.  We strive to keep all of our graduates interacting with the Liberty House facility and each other with these events.  At our Alumni Meeting we have a large dinner catered by different restaurants around town and then have a 12 step meeting afterward.

Why is Liberty House more successful than other sober living homes?

  1. Liberty House Sober Living believes that our dedication, structure, and commitment to helping others are responsible for our success.  Our structure is designed to teach residents how to stay sober over the long run, to make surrenders, to take responsibility for their lives, to incorporate the principles of 12 step Alcoholics Anonymous into their day to day lives which ultimately results in lasting sobriety.   We do not cater to the narcissism of our clients and rotate their chores accordingly.

How does Liberty House emphasize sobriety?

  1. Liberty House Sober Living Home structure is in tune with the program of 12 step Alcoholics Anonymous.  We differ considerably in several areas, and have to because we are an institution, but our goal is to teach our residents to incorporate surrender, honesty, open mindedness and willingness into our day to day lives through our structure.  Liberty House Sober Living Home looks at inventories, character defects, makes amends, prays together, helps each other and learns to love each other through our interactions.  We deal with our feelings, families, and problems.  We bring our clients entire life into the realm of Liberty House and its structure.  Once that is accomplished as much as possible over a period of time our residents become committed and dedicated.  They feel safe and develop a love for the facility and each other.  We begin to feel and learn that we can achieve our goals and lift our consciousness to a hire level.  Once these goals are reached it is obvious to everyone except the client.  Changes occur that are miraculous and indescribable.  One must experience a facility like Liberty House in order to understand its philosophy and effects on its client’s lives.  Clients who do not desire to live according to Liberty House structure and, or who seem to be having a difficult time are given a peer review.  Problem areas are discussed, alternative courses of action are outlined, and the client is given an opportunity to change their behavior in accordance with the Liberty House structure.  If they fail to do so, refuse to do so, or simply cannot do it, then they are asked to leave.  Those seeking placement in other sober living homes are given phone numbers and directions to another sober living facility.

If I am a parent, or sibling of a loved one who has an alcoholic or drug addicted family member, what am I going through and what role does Liberty House play in my child, or sibling’s recovery?

  1. Family members of an alcoholic or drug addict upon entry to Liberty House have a strong support group consisting of current family members, older family members and an established 12 step Al-Anon meeting.  New family members are given the support (if they want it) needed to cope with the effects of alcoholism and drug addiction.  Our experience has shown us that those family members who attend our family groups regularly and 12 step Al-anon meetings begin to recover as well.  Alcoholism is a family disease.  Everyone is suffering, and therefore must be treated.  New family members realize that they are not alone, and begin to feel a sense of hope as does the alcoholic and drug addict.  Thus the journey of a lifetime begins.
