Having Fun in Sobriety
Los Angeles, California—April 17 , 2009
One of the biggest fears of people new to sobriety is that they can’t even begin to imagine life without drugs and alcohol. “I’ll never have any fun being sober” or “what do you mean I can’t hang out with all my old friends!?!”
“The fact is, if you’re into recovery then you can kiss your old party buddies goodbye,” says Nick J. a 19-year-old recovering addict with over a year clean and sober, who now is working in a sober living home in Los Angeles, California. “When I was newly sober there was no way I could hang out with my old using buddies and stay clean. Now that I have over a year of clean time I don’t even think about those guys. I have a whole new crew of sober friends. We surf, play music, go to the movies. Now that I’m sober I actually enjoy spending time with my family.”
The more time you have clean and sober the more you begin to realize that your old life was not what you thought it was. It probably stopped being fun a long time ago. At some point the addict or alcoholic crosses the line between recreational use and being addicted and there’s no turning back. “I heard a guy share something at a meeting, Nick says with a smile.
“I know it sounds corny but he said “once a cucumber becomes a pickle it can never be a cucumber again. And buddy, you are a pickle.” “Being sober doesn’t mean being boring. “the best advice I got from my sponsor was if you’re bored in sobriety that probably means you’re boring”.
Says Nick, “So I took his advice and stopped feeling sorry for myself and started doing stuff. It’s funny, since I stopped spending all my money on drugs I now actually have money to do things I only talked about when I was loaded.” There’s a whole new world that can open up for you in sobriety. Many people go back to school, start a new career, travel, get a hobby. “I’m doing stuff I only dreamed about. The future is wide open,” says Nick. “I never tried sky diving but I definitely plan on doing it.”
